Digital PMO Trends for 2022

As 2021 moves to a close, we take a look at the key trends we can expect to see across the Digital PMO landscape in 2022

Increased remote working

Gartner forecasts that across Europe and the U.K, remote workers will represent 52% of its workforce in 2022. NWT believes adoption of the correct toolset delivered by a high preforming Digital PMO is critical to keeping up with the ever-increasing adoption of remote working across all areas of the project and PMO workforce.

The technology sector is considered an early adopter of remote working and is used to working with development teams consisting of developers located across the world. The sudden arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has however changed the remote working landscape, extending it to all roles in a project team, including roles that may have otherwise be more accustomed to working face-to-face more often to ensure the success of the project.

A good example of this is in Agile SCRUM, where regular ceremonies such as Sprint Planning and Sprint Retrospectives are traditionally held in person for increased productivity and team morale purposes.

This increasing trend in remote working has also led to a change in how the PMO interacts with and harvests project and programme insight.


Technology is expected to be in the PMO spotlight as we move into 2022.

Successful PMO’s are recognising the importance of having access to robust technology stacks to support their day-to-day functions and keep up with demands to centralise processes and provide real-time access to PMO reporting. There is also a drive to embrace automation across the PMO.

Companies are looking to invest in enterprise grade solutions such as Project Portfolio Management from ServiceNow to manage the end-to-end programme and project process, or bespoke solutions to enable much of their existing PMO stack, to continue to function supported by automation to reduce the number of manual administration touchpoints and improve the availability, accuracy and quality of the PMO reporting function.

Data and AI

Data has always played a key role in any high performing Digital PMO providing insights into the success of programmes and projects and supporting automation across multiple PMO functions.

PMO focus on improving data capabilities and the adoption of AI to introduce predictive analytics to provide insights into what may happen alongside what has or is happening across the programme and projects landscape, and produce further opportunity for the automation is expected to feature highly in 2022.

Blended Methodologies

Delivering programmes and projects in a repeatable, standardised way is at the core of the PMO and many have traditionally focussed on adopting a single methodology or approach such as Waterfall to fulfil this core requirement.

At NWT we believe in choosing the best methodology or methodologies for the specific programme or project, for example, Agile using SCRUM or Kanban when iterative product delivery is beneficial, Waterfall when requirements are fixed, well documented and clear and speed is less important, or even a blend of the two across areas such as scope, schedule, communication and teams.

Successful, modern PMO’s can still achieve repeatable and standardised delivery when adopting multiple methodologies, and we predict the adoption of a blended approach to continue into 2022.
