Yesterday we made our annual pilgrimage to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) summit in London and what an event it was. If you’ve never attended before, thousands upon thousands of people attending the 1 day event proceeding the partner day (think Partner day as a bit like a private view, but with less art, cheese and wine!)
We always find the event fascinating and its usually a great opportunity to get an early glimpse into the future and have our minds blown by the innovation coming our way from our friends at Amazon Web Services. It’s also part of our commitment at NWT to ensuring we are keeping up with the latest trends and innovations from not just AWS, but also the many partners that attend and showcase their latest offerings. This commitment to stay one step ahead is what makes our Critical Friend Reviews and CTO as a Service offerings so valuable to our clients.
There were a number of highlights that stood out for us. One of those was the phenomenal exploitation and use of some of the 200+ services AWS offer by Ocado. Ocado have the most advanced processing warehouses on the planet, called the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP). It pulls together 28 of AWS’ services from AI, ML, Edge Compute (due to incredibly high frequency, low latency communication requirements) and a significant emphasis on data analytics, enabling a network of robots to seamlessly navigate an enormous grid, taking and packing items to fulfil customer orders without human intervention. They travel at 4m per second and within 5mm of each other without incident! Take a look at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2uMfpAHdGY Mind blowing!
All of that would not be possible without the technology AWS provides or without a large tech team of incredibly talented individuals within Ocado, that really understand the current technology landscape and know how to exploit it to gain huge competitive advantage.
Our key take away from this summit was not in fact the typically huge leaps in innovation that we come to expect from Amazon. Interestingly, this very much felt like an evolutionary rather revolutionary series of lectures, keynote and partner presentations. We believe that this is symptomatic of Cloud now falling into mainstream. Which in turn means if a business is not yet adopting it effectively, they fall into the late adopters category or worse still, laggards, seriously hindering their ability to drive completive business advantage.
Conversely, this doesn’t mean however, that the businesses with demonstrable Cloud maturity can rest on their laurels. The observation we made regarding the evolutionally rather than revolutionary nature of the event’s content, hides something truly astonishing; the rate of the product evolution and iteration. AWS now have 200+ services, where they made over 3000 updates and modifications to in the past year alone. This is a truly phenomenal and understandably presents an intimidating landscape for any business to keep up to date with. Consider also that AWS are not the only tech companies developing at products at this rate.
We at NWT recognise that not every organisation enjoys the same level of deep technical expertise that the likes of Ocado have, enabling them to keep their current Cloud environments and strategies completely up to date with this relentless rate of development.
We also understand that if your organisation is yet to embark on a cloud journey, at whatever stage you might be at in your thinking, it’s a challenging and daunting prospect where Cloud enabled speed, agility and innovation are essential in maintaining competitive edge.
This is where NWT can help. With our Critical Friend and CTO as a Service offerings, our teams of experts are always up to date on the latest and greatest product offerings and services from companies like AWS and ready to help you, whatever stage of the Cloud journey you are on.
