REDUCED TECHNICAL DEBT
TECHNICAL DEBT IS A FORMIDABLE BARRIER TO SUSTAINING COMPETITIVENESS IN THE DIGITAL AGE
WHAT IS TECHNICAL DEBT
In the past, in lean years when funding was tight, some IT departments ignored issues or applied clunky fixes in infrastructure and application maintenance to prioritise speedy delivery over perfect code. The impact of those fixes can remain hidden for years. But as systems under perform, stop working altogether, or otherwise stand in the way of company goals, it becomes clear that this so-called ‘technical debt’ needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
Tech debt can be a formidable barrier to sustaining competitiveness in the digital age. As organisation moves towards an Agile environment it may well encounter a codebase that has existed for several years or even decades before the agile techniques were adopted. This leads to having to try to work in an Agile way, around code that was not written with Agile modelling, Agile processes and Agile coding in mind. Automatic regression testing that ensures that code changes do not have an adverse effect on the current application functionality
Poor management of technical debt can limit a company’s ability to understand the true value of Digital Transformation. Integrating old systems with new technologies can also cause problems and result in delay and increased cost. Without technical insight, there is a very real danger of spending too much time managing complexity rather than thinking innovatively about the future.
Adopting a proactive approach to reducing technical debt will result in multiple transformational activities.
